Christmas Midnight Mass at Cathedral

His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera, the Bishop of Kurunegala presided over the Christmas Midnight Mass at St. Anne’s Cathedral, Kurunegala. Rev. Fr. Placidus de Silva, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Himishka Roshan, the Assistant Parish Priest of Kurunegala, Rev. Fr. Alexi Calistus, the Assistant Procurator and Rev. Fr. Kapila Manjula, the Secretary to the Bishop concelebrated the Holy Mass. Parish Priest, Assistant Parish Priest Parish and the Pastoral Council of Kurunegala had made all the arrangements for a meaningful celebration.

Year End Recollection

Subject to health guidelines, the December Presbyteral Meeting was held on 21st December at the Bishop’s House, Kurunegala. A special prayer service and the Benediction was held at the beginning. Very Rev. Fr. Nihal Obris, the Episcopal Vicar, the Dean of Kuliyapitiya deanery and the Parish Priest of Nalawalana gave the reflection basing on the season of Christmas in the context of Covid – 19, and the followed by the blessing of the crib, a fraternal encounter and the distributing of the Christmas gifts were also held.

The National Christmas Festival 2020

Date : 19 th December 2020

The National Christmas Festival was held on 19th December at the Premises of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Malkaduwawa. Hon. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse was the chief Guest at the National Event. Most Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera, Roman Catholic Bishop of Kurunegala and Rt. Rev. Dr. Keerthi Sri Fernando, the Anglican Bishop of Kurunegala graced the event. Religious dignitaries from other religions, many political leaders, Catholic and Christian clergy also participated in the programme. Organizing committee headed by Rev. Fr. Tharanga Dilekshika had made all the arrangements for a meaningful National Event. Very rev. Fr. Piyal Janaka Fernando, the Vicar General and Rev. Fr. Niroshan Jayakody, the Parish Priest of Malkaduwawa also involved in the arrangements.

Presbyteral Meeting – November

Monthly Recollection and the Presbyteral Meeting for the month of November was held on 23 rd November at the Bishop’s House, Kurunegala with the approval of the Regional Director of Health and the Police. As one presbyterium all prayed before the Eucharistic Lord for the situation of the entire world due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Rev. Fr. Lional Fernando, Diocesan Coordinator for SCCs delivered the reflection basing on the Mission of the Church during this context of the Corona Virus. Mr. Nishantha Herath, ASP of Kurunegala also addressed the house regarding the security and preventive measures with demonstrations by the police officers to be followed during this particular period.

Senate Meeting

The Senate Meeting was held on the 19 th November 2020 at the Bishop’s House, Kurunegala. In view of the present context of Covid 19, Dr. Pramitha Santhilatha, Regional Director of Health Services Kurunegala, Dr. Lakshitha, Regional Epidemiologist and Dr. Shamali Amarasinghe addressed the meeting.

Launching a New CD by Rev. Fr. Susantha Bernard

Basing on the Biblical themes, a new CD has been launched by Rev. Fr. Susantha Bernard, the Diocesan Director of Family Apostolate and the Parish Priest of Katupotha. The first copy of the CD was presented to His Lordship Most. Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera, the Bishop of Kurunegala on the 16 th of November. Let’s congratulate Fr. Susantha for his mission in the field of music…….

Civic Dialogue Project at Kadawalagedara.

A Civic Dialogue Project was held on 15 th November 2020 at Kadawalagedara. It was a formation programme for community building organized by Janasetha-Sedec, Kurunegala. The objective of this particular programme was to handle the new issues found in the present context of the Corona Pandemic. Mr. Kasun Adikari, counsellar was the resource person of the day. Under the directions of Very Rev. Fr. Piyal Janaka Fernando, the Director and Rev. Fr. Thusitha Priyanga, the Asst. Director of Janasetha, this project had been organized. Rev. Fr. Christy Leonard, the Parish Priest of Kadawalagedara and the parish community facilitated the event immensely.

Four Brothers Ordained Deacons

Four Brothers, having finished their studies and the period of formation ordained Deacons for the Diocese of Kurunegala on 10th October 2020 at the Bishop’s House Chapel. Rev. Dn. Damitha Sri Lal from Walpitagama Parish, Rev. Dn. Ruchira Nuwan from Dunakadeniya parish, Rev. Nalinda Lanka Sri from Thalgahapitiya parish and Rev. Dn. Pushpamal Fernando from Boralessa parish are the Candidates for the Holy Sacrament of Order. Adhering to the rules and regulations issued by the Health Authorities of the Country for the Epidemic ‘Corona’, this ceremony took place with the participation of priests of the Diocese and the immediate family members of these respective candidates.

A Day Retreat for a spiritual Renewal at Yakadapotha

Rev. Fr. Jude Perera, the Priest in charge of yakadapotha with the collaboration of the Parish Pastoral Council had organized a Day Retreat for all the Parishioners of Yakadapotha and Awulegama on 01st of October 2020. They were addressed by Rev. Sisters and Rev. Fathers under three categories. Children were addressed by Rev. Srs. Carmen Fernando, Margeret, Angelina, the sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Angels. Rev. Fr. Dimuthu Fonseka addressed the youth while parents were addressed by Rev. Fr. Sagara Perera. Marking the Peak of the day’s programme, it ended with the Exposition of Blessed Sacrament and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Cricket Match Organized by the Youth at Melsiripura Church

Youth Association of the Sacred Heart of Jesus’ Church Melsiripura organized a Cricket Match with the guidance of Rev. Fr. Milroy Francis, the Parish Priest, on 01st of October 2020. This was organized by the Youth in view of bringing together all the parishioners of the Parish including the sub missionary stations that belong to the main parish. Irrespective of age, everybody participated in this forming their own teams representing their missionary stations. The Programme of the Day marked with the Eucharistic Celebration held in the morning. Rev. Sisters of the Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Malta also collaborated to their maximum in making this event a success.

Youth Retreat in Kurunegala Parish

A special retreat for the members at St. Anne’s Youth Association, Kurunegala was held on 01st October 2020 at Pope Francis Integral Human Formation Centre Dikkele. The day’s proceedings commenced with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Different activities, games and encounters added much meaning to the day. Parish priest, the Assistant parish priest and Rev. Sr. Dilani Fernando HF organized this event with the collaboration of the Youth in the parish.

Third Death Anniversary of His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Raymond Peiris

This was commemorated on 29th September 2020. A requiem Mass was organized at St. Anne’s Cathedral Kurunegala. Rev. Fr. Placidus de Silva, the Parish Priest of the Cathedral presided over the Eucharistic celebration. Many priests of the Diocese were present at the Holy Eucharistic celebration. At the end of the Eucharist the tomb of His Lordship was blessed. A large number of lay faithful including His Lordship’s family members took part in the commemoration.

Rev. Fr. Linus’ Birthday

Rev.Fr. Linus Kurukula arachchi, the eldest priest in the Diocese celebrated his 88th Birthday on 23rd September 2020. A thanksgiving Mass was offered by His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera concelebrating with Rev. Fr. Linus and the priests presented in this occasion. Rev. Fr. Robert Jayathilake made the reflection on the word of God.

Annual Feast of the Minor Seminary

Annual Feast and the Parents’ Day of St. Joseph Vaz Minor Seminary, Millawa were celebrated on 19th September 2020. His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera was the Chief Guest at the celebration. After celebrating the festive Mass, the variety of entertainment programme was staged. Many fathers of the Diocese and the family members of the seminarians joined the event.

Presbyteral Meeting – September

Monthly Recollection and the Presbyteral Meeting was held on 14th September at the Bishop’s House. Rev. Fr. Maria Arul of the Claratian Missionary Fathers (CMF) delivered the reflection of the day focusing on the issues related to the Mission in the Church to Children. The Benediction was conducted by Rev. Fr. Patrick Jayakody, parish Priest of Hettipola.

Annual Feast at Bammanna

Annual feast of the Holy Cross Church at Bammanna in the Parish of Pannala was celebrated on 13th September 2020. His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Harolod Anthony Perera presided over the Festive High Mass. Rev. Fr. George Dixon Perera, the Parish Priest and the Parish Pastoral Council had made all the arrangements for a successful celebration.

125th Jubilee of St. Anne’s Shrine – Kattimahana

125th Jubilee of St. Anne’s Shrine (Traditional Festival of Carts) was celebrated on 29th and 30th August at Kattimahana with a limited number of pilgrims following the health guidelines given by the health authorities. His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera, Bishop of the Diocese of Kurunegala presided over the Vespers and the Festive High Mass. Rev. Fr. Sydney Liyanage, the administrator and Rev. Fr. Gayan Hirantha Herath, the Assistant parish Priest and the festival committee organized the Jubilee Celebrations meaningfully.

Priestly Annual Retreat of the Diocese -2020

After the ‘Corona Epidemic’, the annual retreat for the year 2020 of the diocese was held in view of the spiritual renewal of the priests who serve in the diocese. This was held at St. Anne’s Shrine, Thalawila. Fifty-five priests of the diocese participated in the retreat held from 10th August to 15th August. The preacher and the facilitator of the retreat was His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo.

Diocesan Pastoral Council

Diocesan Pastoral Council was held on 01st of August 2020 at ‘Sathapahana’ Kuliyapitiya. This was organized by Very Rev. Fr. Nihal Obris, the Coordinator of all Apostolates in the Diocese. Many were attended representing Parish Pastoral Councils of different parishes. His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera addressed the gathering and listened to the proposals and suggestions made in view of deepening the zest and Zeal of the Missionary Spirit in the Parishes. Very Rev. Fr. Piyal Janaka Fernando, the Vicar General of the Diocese and Rev. Fr. Lionel Fernando also made this event very effective sharing their vast knowledge of Pastoral experience in parishes.

St. Anne’s Cathedral Celebrates the Jubilee of 200 Years

The Catholic Community in Kurunegala celebrated the 200th Jubilee Feast on 26th July 2020 of St. Anne’s Cathedral. St. Anne’s Church established in the Year 1820, and now the Cathedral of the Diocese of Kurunegala created 33 years ago, on May 15 1987 is the central church in the Diocese. His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera presided over the Jubilee Holy Mass. Rev. Fr. Basil Rohan Fernando, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies and Rev. Fr. Christy Leonard, administrator of the Cathedral joined with His Lordship in celebrating the Festive High Mass.

The feast of Our Lady of Madhu was held in 12th July 2020. Very Rev. Fr. Piyal Janaka Fernando, the Vicar General of the Diocese presided the Vespers service and the Festive High Mass was presided over by His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Harold Anthony Perera. Rev. Fr. Milroy Francis, the present parish priest had organized this feast in accordance with the rules and guidelines issued by the Health Department due to Corona pandemic. Adhering to the guidelines issued by the Health sector, this feast was celebrated with the participation of minimum number of faithful.

Our Chief Shepherd, His Lordship Most Rev. Dr.Harold Anthony Perera Celebrates His 40 th Anniversary of the Priesthood

A thanksgiving Mass was organized by the Presbyteral family on 06 th July 2020 at Dikkele, Integral Human Formation Center. All the priests of the diocese took part in this event. Rev. Fr. Piyal Janaka Fernando, Vicar General of the Diocese speaking on behalf of the presbyteral family thanked and felicitated His lordship for the enormous service that he has rendered to the Sri Lankan Church. As a mark of the celebration of his 40 th anniversary of the priesthood, he also laid the foundation stone for building a New Chapel to this center.
