Catholic Diocese of Kurunegala
Catholic Diocese of Kurunegala is a religious organization, which has been in existence since 1987 when it was split from Chilaw diocese. The mission of the diocese, as a religious institution, is to propagate Catholic faith. As a Faith-based agency for development, the diocese endeavors to compassionately alleviate human suffering and pain by addressing underlying causes of poverty through the provision of humanitarian and developmental services to the entire society.
The Catholic community of the Diocese of Kurunegala, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and in unity with the universal Church, boldly proclaims the Gospel of Jesus, prayerfully worships in word and sacrament, and compassionately serves those in need, in order to advance God’s Kingdom of justice and love.
Year theme 2020
The Year of Evangelization is a multi-faceted effort to reach out to our lost brothers and sisters in Christ to welcome them back to the Catholic Church, strengthen the faithful and share with others the teachings of the Catholic Faith.
Year of Evangelization, is calling Catholics to celebrate, and refocus on, the Christian duty to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Throughout Church history Catholics have invited one and all to receive the Gospel’s promise of salvation from a fallen world—from sin and death.
The Year of Evangelization continues this core Christian activity. It is a call to personal evangelization —to be true witnesses of the Word of God; it is a time for the Church of Providence to re-energize the faithful; it is a time to invite home those who have wandered from the Church for whatever reason. It is a time to bring the Gospel message boldly into the public square.
"The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; He has sent me to bring good news to the afflicted, to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, release to the prisoners."
